Birchbox Review for April 2019

Every month, Birchbox sends the items in a cute, small box that coordinates with that month’s theme. It’s hard to tell from the image above, but this one has a holographic (iridescent?) pattern on it.

Let’s continue on with the Birchbox Review for April 2019. Here’s what was inside.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Full Size Price: $46
Full Size Amount: 300 ml / 8.5 oz

From the brand:

  • Invisible dry hair spray adds volume and texture
  • Can be used as an alternative to dry shampoo
  • Formulated without parabens, gluten, or sodium chloride
  • Color and keratin treatment safe
  • UV protection for hair
  • Cruelty-free
  • Contains their own signature fragrance in their products
  • Some of their products do contain cosmetic grade alcohol, synthetic ingredients, and silicone

My thoughts

This is not a dry shampoo. I thought it was when I grabbed it in a rush and quickly realized that it wasn’t. It felt to me like hairspray and it did give my hair a ton of volume. After I sprayed it throughout my hair, I curled some loose waves and was happy with the way my hair turned out that day.

Jouer Creme Highlighter

Full Size Price: $22
Full Size Amount: 0.07 oz / 2 g

From the brand:

  • Designed to complement all skin tones
  • Lightweight cream highlighter
  • Contains beeswax, so it is not vegan
  • Contains parabens
  • Working toward reformulations to avoid parabens in the future
  • Cruelty-free and does not test on animals

My thoughts:

For some reason, me and cream highlighters don’t work well together. I didn’t like how this one turned out at all. I think it has more to do with the texture of my skin rather than the quality of this highlight because that was all that I noticed when I wore this.

Smashbox Cosmetics Super Fan Mascara

Full Size Price: $19
Full Size Amount: 0.33 oz / 10 ml

From the brand:

  • Mascara that is supposed to give you length, lift, and volume
  • Formulated without parabens, phthalates, oil, fragrance, and silicone
  • Cruelty-free

My thoughts:

This mascara really let me down. It did not hold my curl, lengthen, or thicken. My lashes were clumpy. I used it on my lower lash line and it worked fine. It did work a little better when I applied the LASHfood primer, but it still wasn’t as good as the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara or some of my other favorites. After about 3 attempts, I don’t wear this anymore.

Is The Birchbox Subscription Worth The Money?

I like some of the brands I was introduced to in this month’s Birchbox. However, I think the Ipsy Glam Bag and Allure Beauty Box are better options if you only want to sign up for one or two subscriptions.

I signed up for this when they came out saying that they are completely revamping their subscription (referral link). I do like getting to try new products, because obviously. So I am going to stick with it and continue to share my reviews here on this site. If you’d like to see another one of my Birchbox reviews, check out this one from March 2019.
